Gleditschia is a genus of deciduous trees with a height of 10-25 m. The straight trunk and branches are covered with long branching spines. The bark is brown and smooth. The leaves are pinnate, unevenly toothed, up to 30 cm long. In July, small greenish flowers, collected in axillary brushes, unattractive (not moth-like, unlike all other legumes), consisting of 3-5 petals, bloom. The fruits are long, flat, small-seeded beans. Lentil seeds retain their germination capacity for 3-4 years. The most common type is Gleditschia vulgaris, or three - pronged (Gleditschia triacanthos). The trunk and branches are covered with simple or branching spines. Compound leaves are composed of oblong-lanceolate leaflets. Their light green color in summer gives way to a beautiful light yellow in autumn. The fruits stay on the plant all winter. It is widely known as "Bezostaya", where there are no dangerous thorns. The variety 'Buyoti' (or 'Hanging') has drooping branches. Compact 'Elegant' is characterized by slow growth. 'Moraine', which has no spines, is perfect for planting along the streets. 'Sunrise' (or' Stingless golden') - gledichia without thorns. Young leaves are colored in a golden yellow color. Gledichia kaspica (G. caspica ) is an ornamental tree or shrub covered at an early stage with many spines up to 15 cm long. The leaves are larger than in other species. Gledichia Delavea (G. delavayi) is a small plant with dark green glossy leaves. It forms young copper-colored shoots with very large spines. Gledichia japonica (G. japonica) is a very stable plant with an almost pyramidal shape. The leaves of gledichia krupnotsvetkovaya (G. macrantha) are of various sizes. The beans are very long.

Cultivation

Gledichia is used in urban landscaping, hedges, in protective strips to strengthen slopes, as it has a powerful and branched root system. Thanks to its tolerance to environmental pollution, it survives perfectly in urban conditions. Plants are finally planted in autumn (in cold climates) or in spring. As for the soil, they do not have any special requirements, gledichia grow well on fertile loamy soils. They do not require pruning, you just need to remove dry, damaged or poorly growing branches.

Location

These plants develop best in the open sun.

Temperature

Gledichia is resistant to fluctuations in air temperature.

Watering

It is only required for young plants immediately after planting in the ground and during prolonged drought.

Reproduction

They are propagated by seeds and root offspring. The most common method is sowing seeds. In March, seeds previously soaked for several hours in water to improve germination are sown in containers filled with seed soil, placed in a closed, unheated room. After the emergence of seedlings, they are planted in new pots. Planted in a permanent place usually after 2-3 years.

Diseases

Sometimes there is spotting on the leaves due to Linospora gleditschiae, in this case it is necessary to collect and destroy the damaged leaves. Mouth guards grow on trunks and branches due to infection with various fungi, such as oidium (rarely on such a scale that processing is required) or wood smut (the plant should be destroyed). Attack and insects-larvae of Agrilus difficilis gnaw holes in the wood (no effective way to deal with them has been found yet). The midge of the Gallica glediciae (Dasyneura gleditschiae) provokes the appearance of galls (swellings) on the branches. However, this lesion is rarely so serious that it requires chemical treatment. Shedding leaves causes damage to the pest Diaphnocoris chlorionis, which is disposed of with the insecticide sevina.

Acquisition

Gledichia is quite easy to find in specialized nurseries and gardening centers. If you are not going to use these plants in hedges, it is best to opt for a "Standless" one that does not have thorns.
