There are 15 species of these plants, herbaceous perennials with creeping shoots that bush from the base. Numerous leaves are arranged on the stem in two rows. The flowers are green or yellowish, collected in axillary inflorescences-heads or panicles, they do not represent decorative value. Most often, two types are grown in indoor floriculture. Pellyonia Davo (Pellionia daveauana) is distinguished by pinkish, well-leafed stems and brown-purple, almost black, with light green or silver-green leaves in the middle. They are up to 7 cm long, thin, juicy, with a sloping base, their oval shape at a young age changes over time to an elongated oval. Flowers collected in a loose panicle appear in August. It is found in the wild in the forests of Vietnam and Burma. Beautiful pellyonia (P. pulchra) is native to Kampuchea and Vietnam. Its shoots are reddish, the leaves are oval velvety, light green to grayish-green, covered with a network of brownish or black veins. The underside of the leaf plate is purple. Flowers in dense umbels are located in the axils of the leaves.

Cultivation

Grow pellyonia exclusively in closed ground. Plants in culture are unpretentious: they do not have a pronounced dormant period and therefore care for them throughout the year is almost the same. During active growth, you can feed the pellyonia with a complex fertilizer. Plants do not tolerate drafts and permutations from place to place. The soil for plants should be light, nutritious and acidic (pH 5,8-6). Pellyonia can also be grown on hydroponics. Since the roots of these plants are shallow, the pot is chosen low and wide. Pellyonias are often used as ampelny plants. Planted in hanging pots, they produce many long shoots hanging over the edge. They are no less valuable as groundcover species that create a beautiful colored carpet under larger indoor plants.

Location

Pellyonias are a group of shade-tolerant plants. They feel good on the windowsills of windows facing north and even at some distance from the window. Pellyonia - plants are tender, suffer from direct sunlight. For them, partial shade is preferable, although in the shade the color of the leaves becomes less bright.

Temperature

These plants are thermophilic. Pellyonias require a fairly high temperature all year round. In the rooms where they grow, the temperature in winter should not fall below 16-18 °C.

Watering

Water the pellyonias regularly and abundantly with water at room temperature. For the normal growth and development of these plants, make sure that the soil is constantly moist. Pellyonia are inhabitants of tropical forests, so they need high humidity. It is recommended to cover the soil surface with sphagnum moss, and place the pot itself on a pallet with pebbles or expanded clay. Regularly moisten moss and expanded clay, trying not to get water on the leaves. Spraying is carried out in the morning and evening hours: in summer, at this time, the air temperature is not too high.

Transplant

The plant is held by the stem at the root neck, gently released from the pot. Carefully, trying not to damage the roots, remove the old depleted or infected earth, place the plant in a pot previously prepared for transplanting, then cover the roots with fresh earth, while simultaneously crushing it. The root neck is not covered with earth. When transplanting and transshipment, rotten roots are removed, the presence of which indicates stagnation of water at the bottom of the pot. In this case, check the drainage, if necessary, clean the drainage hole. Transplanting is best done in the spring, before the start of intensive care growth of shoots.

Reproduction

You can propagate pellyonias by seed, but it is easier and easier to use stem cuttings for this purpose, which take root well in water or soil. There should be at least one pair of buds on the cuttings. It is advisable to cut the leaves to 1/3 or 1/2 length.

Diseases

Pellyonias are generally resistant to diseases and pests, but if the plants are still attacked by aphids or thrips, treat them with an appropriate insecticide.

Garden in a bottle "Bottle gardens" is not only a fashionable design element, an opportunity to add a missing touch, "zest" to the interior of the room, but also a sound practical solution, when without much effort they create comfortable conditions for a small plant that needs moist air. Pellyonia is an ideal plant for such a garden. Choose a container made of transparent glass. A layer of charcoal, expanded clay or sawdust and a layer of peat are poured into it. Then carefully, so as not to stain the walls, put your pets. If the container has a too narrow neck, into which the hand does not pass, all manipulations are performed using teaspoons, to the handles of which sticks of the desired length are tied. The opening of the receptacle must remain open. "Bottle garden" is placed away from the sun and watered carefully so that the plants do not rot.
