The genus Cinquefoil, or Potentilla, includes approximately 500 annual and perennial plants, mostly herbaceous, but also shrubby and semi-shrubby. Most often, Cinquefoil is a small herbaceous rhizomatous perennial, sometimes almost creeping. Single flowers are simple or double in various colors: yellow, white, red, brown, purple. The leaves are pinnate or palmate. The height of the dark blood-red cinquefoil (Potentilla atrosanguinea) is 30-50 cm. Compound leaves are made up of 3 leaflets. In June, red flowers bloom up to 5 cm in diameter. The plant is known for its cultivated garden forms and varieties with characteristic yellow, red, purple and orangish simple or double flowers. The leaves are gray-green, sometimes silvery. Nepalese cinquefoil (P. nepalensis) is a perennial herb 30-50 cm tall with purplish-red flowers. Blooms in July-August. Hybrid varieties with pink, orange (with dark veins) and dark red, cherry-pink (with a dark eye) flowers are bred. Creeper-weed (P. reptans) is a creeping perennial herbaceous species that sometimes clogs land plots. In summer, numerous yellow flowers bloom. Ternata is a perennial herbaceous species up to 20 cm tall with long-blooming yellow flowers. In floriculture, white cinquefoil (P. alba), silver-leaved cinquefoil (P. argyrophylla) and, finally, hybrid cinquefoil (Potentilla x hybrida) are also popular. Shrubby species include the tree-like Cinquefoil (P. arbuscula), which grows up to 50-60 cm in height. The branches are pubescent, the pinnate leaves are also covered with bronze fluff, the glossy yellow flowers bloom all summer until October. Fruticosa Cinquefoil, or Kuril tea (P. fruticosa, Dasiphora fruticosa), is a branching shrub up to 1-2 m tall with light green leaves and numerous glossy yellow flowers. There are many different hybrid varieties with flowers intermediate between white, ivory, yellow, orange and purple shades, including Tangerine with orange flowers up to 4 cm in diameter, Wilmara with cream flowers and silvery rough pubescent leaves.

Cultivation
Cinquefoil is used for the device flower bed, mixborders, on rocky areas, less often-in pots, and they are always grown outdoors. In the open ground, plants are planted in autumn or spring in fertilized slightly acidic soil, loamy, well-drained. Complete mineral fertilizer is applied in the amount of 30-40 g /m2. In the spring, they are fed with liquid fertilizer with irrigation water, diluting it in a concentration of 10-20 ml per bucket of water. Cinquefoil belongs to winter-hardy crops.

Location
These are plants that need an open place, you can direct the sun.
Temperature
Cinquefoil are resistant to both high and low air temperatures.
Watering
The soil should always be sufficiently moist. During periods of prolonged drought, they are watered frequently; they are also watered abundantly after planting in the ground.
Care
At the end of winter, the aboveground part of the bushes is cut, dry and poorly located branches are completely removed, and too long ones are shortened.
Reproduction
Propagate by dividing bushes, offspring, seeds. Seeds are planted at the end of winter in a closed room (for example, a mini-greenhouse) at a temperature of 15-18 °C. Shrubby species are propagated by seeds, layers and herbaceous cuttings in late summer. Herbaceous species are propagated at the end of winter by dividing the bush.
Diseases
There are spots on the leaves, in addition, plants are susceptible to rust infection. However, these problems are rare and not so serious that treatment with antifungal drugs is necessary. Just as rarely, cinquefoil is affected by aphids.
Acquisition
Cinquefoil is easily found in gardening centers and nurseries. If you buy shrubby species, select strong and well-formed specimens. Compact herbaceous species should be overgrown. Make sure that the plant is healthy.
